Azure sql database external table blob storage

In the search box type [Storage] and [Select Storage account] under Featured. Create Storage Account and secure access to it. Creates an external data source for PolyBase. Read more here. Creating an external file format is a prerequisite for creating an External Table. By creating an External File Format, you specify the actual layout of the data referenced by an external table.

PolyBase supports the following file formats:. To access the data stored in Azure Blob Storage or Hadoop you need to Create an external table for each of the files.

External Tables can be accessed as normal tables. External tables are just for reading.

Some industries are more regulated and have stricter compliance regulations than others.

Building Your First Azure SQL Data Warehouse

As a database administrator, how can we provide an audit trail to a compliance officer when a security issue has occurred? Azure SQL database now supports audit logs stored in a blob storage container.

If your company is very innovative, you might have been notified that table storage for audit logs was deprecated in April In fact, there is no support for this logging type in the Azure Portal. If you are interested, detailed information can be found on the Department of Health and Human Services website. Our boss has asked us to create a proof of concept showcasing auditing in Azure using blob storage.

We are going to use a combination of techniques that we learned in prior articles to accomplish the following tasks. I suggest that you try building these scripts on your own so that you learn the cmdlets. However, I will be supplying a complete set of working scripts at the end of the article. I have chosen to create a resource group named rg4tips17 in the East US region. This group will contain all the other objects we create in Azure.

Enter this address into our cmdlet to create a firewall rule named fr4laptop. We need to connect to the server to create the database schema.

Choose the database engine as the server type. The image below shows a typical connect to server login window. Right now, there is one custom user defined database. By default, you should be in the master database.

Open a new query window and switch the database context using the drop down to the hippa database. Execute the script sample-hippa-database. The end result of the execution is three tables in the active schema. Please see image below. If we take a closer look at the system objects, we can see that each of the three tables have a surrogate primary key. I forgot to mention that the Human Resources department at this center is very bad at recruiting qualified doctors.

We have the top ten most evil doctors of all time on our payroll. Now that we had a little fun, it is time to restate the obvious. We are working with just a sample database with sample data contained within sample tables. However, I did use staging tables with various real data sets to randomly create patient and visit information.

These tables were removed at the end of the script as a cleanup task. In fact, a variable inside the script can be used to determine the number of records created for each table. For this tip, I created only 20 records and showed 10 records in each of the screen shots below. But in the meantime it can be tedious even frustrating and the end result is something that could have been achieved with a different method.

I will simplify things here as your true source of information should be the official documentation so I am very conveniently allowing myself to be somewhat casual. There is can be a difference between a storage account and a blob storage account!

Though you can hear people talking about them as actual synonyms. A little childhood-like way to remember it: every blob storage account is a storage account but not all storage account is a blob storage account.

As I think of it, the name actually shows that blob storage account is a sub-concept of storage account. But what actually a storage account is? It is basically a general digital space that you can store what a surprise!

There are four different types of storage at the same time i. In the case of general storage account, Azure Storage Explorer shows it as External. There is a way to provision a storage account straight as blob:.

As a rule of thumb use V2 if the price is inside your budget. V1 and blob are becoming a legacy feature. They say a lot more in a simple way, so head there for additional details! So blob is not the container or the storage or something else, blob is the file itself!

I heard different people having a different understanding about this but when it comes to coding you have to know how all this is structured.

How to reference a blob? Since it is an online object you need a URL that points to it and a key that gives you access. That URL is put together of the following 3 parts:. The URL always starts with https and after the name of the storage account which is custom given by the person provisioning the service it always has the. Please find below an example:.

And it is … it should have been… if the storage account was originally set up correctly. Yet it gave me a good lesson to explore these different ways:. Almost the same using Power BI I think behind the scenes it can actually be the same with a different visual theme :.

This is a handy tool provided by Microsoft for free. You can download it. Provide the URL and the key of course when a proper key is entered the red warning message disappears — or should disappear. If everything is configured correctly, after clicking next you should have access to the storage:.

Note the External next to the obfuscated storage account name! See details in the Concept at the beginning!By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie PolicyPrivacy Policyand our Terms of Service.

Automatically, we get the data in our mapped Parquet file of Blob storage. We get the data in our mapped Parquet file of Blob storage automatically.

Users prefer storing the data in cost-effective distributed and scalable systems, such as Hadoop. Query the data stored in Azure Blob Storage. Azure blob storage is a convenient place to store the data for use by Azure services. There is no need for a separate ETL or import tool. Integrates with BI tools. It uses statistics on external tables to make the cost-based decisions. Pushing computation creates MapReduce jobs and leverages Hadoop's distributed computational resources.

This enables parallel data transfer between SQL Server instances and Hadoop nodes, and it adds computing resources for operating on the external data. Step 2 Create a symmetric Master Key. Step 3 Create a scoped credential. We must give the storage account key here. Step 4 Create an external data source.

Here, we are giving parquet as format. If you check the external resource in the database, you can find there is one external data source and external file format now created. Step 7 Insert some sample data to the external table.

If you check the blob storage, you can find the new parquet file created now. The issues are already raised to Microsoft and I will cover those details in another article.

There are lots of other features available with PolyBase, that is a matter of another article. Next Recommended Article.

Starting position Starting position is a file in an Azure Blob Storage container. This file was created with U-SQL in an other post to quickly process large amounts of files in Azure.

In the next step we will use a credential that points to the Azure Blob Storage. To encrypt that credential, we first need to create a master key in our Azure SQL Data Warehouse, but only if you do not already have one. You can check that in the table sys. Else we need to create one. For this example we will not use the password. Go to the Azure portal and find the Storage Account that contains your blob file. Then go to the Access keys page and copy the key1 or key2.

You can find all credentials in the table sys. You can find all external data sources in the table sys. This is done in the External Table. This allows you to use multiple files from the same container as External Tables.

Filename not in External Data Source 4 External File format Now we need to describe the format used in the source file. In our case we have a comma delimited file. You can also use this file format to supply the date format, compression type or encoding.

You can find all external file formats in the table sys. In this create table script you need to specify all columns, datatypes and the filename that you want to read. The filename starts with a forward slash. You also need the datasource from step 3 and the file format from step 4. It will handle it like a regular data row and throw an error when the datatype doesn't match.

However this only works when the datatype of the header is different than the datatypes of the actual rows. Else you have to filter the header row in a subsequent step. However the table is read-only so you can not delete, update or insert records.

If you update the source file then the data in this external table also changes instantly because the file is used to get the data. The big advantage of PolyBase is that you only have one copy of the data because the data stays in the file.

In a next post we will see how to read the same file from the Azure Data Lake Store which does not use the Access keys. No comments:. Newer Post Older Post Home.
